WHAT WE DO

Our Mission

To create a community of youth and young adults who are confident that their hopes, dreams, and aspirations can be a reality through the grace of God.

Objectives

  • Provide soft job skills training, character development, and part time employment to Sherman Park area youth (ages 14 to 18).

  • Provide experiential education in growing and cooking fresh vegetables to community members with the aim of promoting community health.

  • Provide locally grown produce for use in St. Joseph’s Hospital and in the community at-large.

How Objectives will be Achieved:

  • Young people between ages 14 to 18 will be recruited for the program and work through the City of Milwaukee’s Earn to Learn program.

  • A demonstration garden will be operated at our Burleigh farm. This garden will have handicapped accessible beds and serve as a teaching tool for the community.

  • A production farm of approximately 1.3 acres will be operated at the St. Mike’s farm in partnership with the Wheaton-Franciscan - All Saints Family Care Center.

  • St. Joseph’s food service director will indicate his weekly needs as we sell wholesale produce for the hospital.

  • A farmers market will be operated in the St. Joseph’s Hospital cafeteria and at the summer concerts in Gengler Park to provide fresh produce to hospital employees and the community. Produce will be marketed under the label: “MCL Urban Farms.”

  • Doctors at the All Saints and St. Joseph’s Hospital will be provided vouchers to give patients who are advised to make dietary changes. This voucher can be redeemed for a box of vegetables at no cost to the patient. Any patient who is a veteran or uses Medicare or Medicaid can continue to receive these boxes for the entire growing season.
